Long Division Calculator with Steps
Divide numbers by long division with every step shown — quotient and remainder or decimals, repeating decimals and the written layout.

Long division breaks a big division into a series of small ones you can do in your head. You work through the dividend from left to right. At each step you ask how many times the divisor fits into the current number, write that digit above the dividend in the quotient, multiply the digit by the divisor, subtract the product, and bring down the next digit of the dividend. The four actions — divide, multiply, subtract, bring down — repeat until no digits are left. Whatever remains at the end is the remainder.
This calculator writes out the same layout you would use on paper, with the quotient above the bracket, each product under the number it was subtracted from, and a line under every subtraction. Below the layout, every step is explained in words so you can follow the reasoning or compare it with your own working. The check line multiplies the quotient by the divisor and adds the remainder, which must give back the original dividend.
Decimals, remainders and repeating digits
If you set decimal places to zero and both numbers are whole, the answer is a whole-number quotient with a remainder, such as 1234 ÷ 7 = 176 R 2. To continue past the decimal point instead, enter the number of decimal places you want: the calculator adds zeros after the dividend's decimal point and keeps dividing, exactly as you would by hand. When the divisor itself has a decimal point, both numbers are first multiplied by the same power of ten so the divisor becomes a whole number — 12.75 ÷ 2.5 is worked as 127.5 ÷ 25.
Some divisions never end. Dividing by 3, 7, 9 or 11, for example, produces digits that repeat forever. The exact decimal result marks the repeating block in parentheses, so 1 ÷ 6 shows as 0.1(6) and 1 ÷ 7 as 0.(142857). The calculator uses exact integer arithmetic for every step, so even long numbers are divided without rounding errors, and nothing you enter leaves your browser.
How to use
- Enter the dividend and divisorType the number being divided and the number you divide by. Decimals and negative numbers are allowed.
- Choose remainder or decimalsLeave decimal places at 0 to get a quotient with a remainder, or enter how many decimal places to calculate.
- Follow the worked layoutRead the long division written out in the classic bracket layout, aligned digit by digit.
- Check each stepRead the numbered steps — divide, multiply, subtract, bring down — and verify the answer with the check line.
