Average Calculator — Mean, Median, Mode
Free average calculator: find the mean, median, mode, midrange, geometric and harmonic mean of any list of numbers, with the working shown.
🔒 Runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploadedWhat an average tells you
An average condenses a list of numbers into one representative value. Most people mean the arithmetic mean: add the numbers and divide by the count. It is the right choice for evenly spread data such as test scores, daily temperatures or the weight of items from the same batch. This calculator shows the mean together with the other common measures of the centre, so you can compare them side by side instead of running several separate tools.
Mean, median and mode compared
The median is the middle number of the sorted list, or the average of the two middle numbers when the count is even. It is resistant to outliers: one very large salary can drag the mean far upward, while the median barely moves. The mode is the value that occurs most often and is the only average that works for categories as well as numbers. When no value repeats, the calculator reports that there is no mode, and when several values tie it lists all of them. The midrange is simply the average of the smallest and largest values, a quick but outlier-sensitive estimate.
The geometric mean multiplies the values and takes the n-th root. It is the correct average for percentage growth over several periods and for ratios. The harmonic mean divides the count by the sum of reciprocals and is the correct way to average rates, for example the average speed when you travel two equal distances at different speeds. Both are only defined for positive numbers, so the calculator shows “n/a” if your list contains zero or negatives.
Tips for accurate results
Paste data straight from a spreadsheet column, a text file or a message; commas, semicolons, spaces and line breaks all work as separators, and a comma between two digits is read as a decimal comma. Remove headers and units first, because stray text is ignored rather than counted. For a weighted average, where some values count more than others, use the weighted average calculator, and for the spread of your data use the standard deviation calculator. Everything is computed locally in your browser, so private figures never leave your device.
How to use
- Enter your numbersType or paste the values, separated by commas, spaces or new lines. Decimals and negative numbers are fine.
- Read every averageThe mean, median, mode, midrange, geometric mean and harmonic mean update instantly as you type.
- Check the workingThe line under the results shows how the mean was calculated, so you can copy it into homework or a report.
