Three ways to work with percentage change

Percentage change questions come in three flavours, and this calculator covers all of them. The first is percent change between two values: you know where you started and where you ended up and want the percentage. The formula is (new โˆ’ old) รท |old| ร— 100, so a positive answer is an increase and a negative one is a decrease. Use it for price rises, salary changes, weight loss, traffic growth or any before-and-after comparison.

The second mode increases or decreases a number by a percentage. Enter a number and a percent and pick a direction to get the new value, for example 200 plus 15 % is 230 and 200 minus 15 % is 170. This is how sales prices, tax-inclusive prices and mark-ups are calculated: multiply by 1 + p รท 100 for an increase or 1 โˆ’ p รท 100 for a decrease.

Working backwards to the original value

The third mode answers โ€œwhat was it before?โ€. If a shirt costs 68 after a 15 % discount, the original price is 68 รท 0.85 = 80, not 68 plus 15 %. The percentage always refers to the original amount, so you divide rather than add back. The same idea reveals the pre-tax price of an item or the starting population before a known growth rate.

Common mistakes to avoid

Percent increases and decreases are not symmetric: a 50 % rise followed by a 50 % fall leaves you at 75 % of the start, not 100 %. Also keep percent change separate from percentage points. If an interest rate moves from 4 % to 5 %, that is one percentage point but a 25 % increase. The calculator prints the formula with your numbers so you can check every step and copy the working. If you are comparing two values with no clear โ€œbeforeโ€ and โ€œafterโ€, the percent error calculator offers a symmetric percentage difference. All calculations happen in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How to use

  1. Choose what to findPick percent change between two values, increase or decrease a number by a percent, or find the original value.
  2. Enter the numbersFill in the two fields. The labels change to match the calculation you picked.
  3. Read the resultSee the percentage or new value, the absolute difference and the formula with your numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate percentage increase?
Percentage increase = (new โˆ’ old) รท old ร— 100. Going from 80 to 100 gives (100 โˆ’ 80) รท 80 ร— 100 = 25 %.
How do I calculate percentage decrease?
Use the same formula; a negative answer is a decrease. From 100 to 80 gives (80 โˆ’ 100) รท 100 ร— 100 = โˆ’20 %, a 20 % decrease.
Why is a 25 % increase not undone by a 25 % decrease?
The second percentage applies to a larger number. 80 increased by 25 % is 100, but 100 decreased by 25 % is 75. To undo a 25 % increase you need a 20 % decrease.
How do I find the original price after a discount or markup?
Divide the final value by (1 ยฑ percent รท 100). A price of 230 after a 15 % increase was 230 รท 1.15 = 200 originally. Use the third mode of this calculator.
Can the percentage be more than 100 %?
Yes. An increase of more than 100 % means the value more than doubled. A decrease cannot exceed 100 %, because that would take the value below zero.
