Why compare unit prices

Shelf prices are hard to compare because products come in different sizes: a 500 g pack at 2.49 against a 1 kg pack at 4.29, or a 750 ml bottle against a 1.5 litre one. The unit price removes the guesswork by converting every product to the cost of one common unit. Supermarkets in many countries print it on the shelf label, but it is often in a different unit from the one you are comparing, or missing for promotional items. This calculator lets you work it out yourself in seconds.

How the comparison works

Enter the price, the quantity on the package and its unit for each product. The calculator converts the quantity to a common base unit (grams, millilitres or items), divides the price by it, and shows the result in the unit you chose, for example per kilogram or per litre. The product with the lowest unit price is highlighted as the best value, and every other product shows the percentage extra you pay compared with it. You can mix units within a category, such as ounces and grams or fluid ounces and millilitres, which is handy when comparing imported products or shops that label in different systems.

Beyond the cheapest price

The lowest unit price is a strong guide but not the only factor. Multi-buy deals, loyalty prices and coupons change the real cost, so enter the final price you would actually pay. Think about shelf life and storage as well: buying a huge pack of perishable food that you cannot finish wastes the savings. For items sold by count, such as batteries, nappies or capsules, compare the price per piece, and remember that โ€œper sheetโ€ or โ€œper washโ€ are often the fairest measures for household goods.

Add up to ten products at once and use the table to copy the results. If you are comparing discounts rather than package sizes, the discount calculator may be a better fit. Everything is calculated locally in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

What is unit price?
Unit price is the cost of one standard unit, such as one kilogram, one litre or one item. It lets you compare packages of different sizes fairly.
Is the bigger package always cheaper per unit?
No. Larger sizes are often cheaper per unit, but not always, because of promotions and different brands. Always compare the unit price.
Can I compare different units, like ounces and grams?
Yes. Each row has its own unit and the calculator converts everything within the same category (weight, volume or count) before comparing.
How do I calculate the price per 100 g?
Divide the price by the weight in grams and multiply by 100. Alternatively read the per-kg price in the table and divide it by 10.
Does the cheapest unit price always mean the best value?
Not necessarily. A bulk bargain that spoils before you use it costs more than a smaller pack you finish. Consider quality, storage and how much you will actually use.
