Weighted GPA formula

Grade point average combines course grades with course credit weight. The formula is weighted GPA = sum(grade points × credits) ÷ sum(credits). A four-credit class affects the result more than a one-credit class because it contributes more quality points and more credits to the total. If an A- is worth 3.7 points and the course has 3 credits, it adds 11.1 quality points. The final GPA divides all counted quality points by all counted credits.

The default mapping is a common 4.0 scale with plus and minus grades, but schools vary. Some use A+ as 4.3, some treat A+ as 4.0, and some have pass/fail or weighted honors rules. The mapping field is editable so you can match the scale printed in your syllabus or transcript. Use comma-separated entries such as A=4.0,B=3.0,C=2.0,D=1.0,F=0.

Adding courses and credits

Enter each course on its own row with a grade and credit value. The course name is optional and only helps you keep rows organized. Credits can be decimals if your school uses half-credit courses. Rows with zero credits are ignored. Rows with a grade that is not found in the mapping are also ignored and mentioned in the summary so a typo does not silently change the answer.

Use GPA estimates carefully

This calculator is useful for planning a semester, checking how future grades may affect your average, or verifying manual math. Official transcripts may use repeated-course rules, transfer credits, weighted courses, academic forgiveness or rounding policies that are not modeled here. All grades and credits stay in the browser; the page does not upload or store academic records.

Worked example and planning tips

On the common scale, A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3 and A is 4.0. Three courses with 3, 4 and 3 credits earning A-, B+ and A give quality points of 11.1 + 13.2 + 12.0 = 36.3 over 10 credits, for a GPA of 3.63.

Grade matching ignores upper or lower case, so a- and A- are treated the same, but a typo such as AA is skipped and reported. Pass/fail courses that do not count toward GPA can be left out or given zero credits. To plan ahead, add your current courses, then add hypothetical rows with the grades you expect and watch how the result moves. To see a cumulative average, include earlier terms as additional rows; the more credits you already have, the less any single new course can change the total.

How to use

  1. Enter coursesAdd each course grade and credit value. Extra rows can be added as needed.
  2. Adjust grade mappingUse the default 4.0 scale or edit the grade-to-points mapping.
  3. Read weighted GPAThe calculator multiplies points by credits and divides by total credits.
