Built-in conversion factors

This unit converter covers four everyday categories: length, weight or mass, temperature and data size. For length and mass, each unit has a factor to a base unit. Length values convert through meters, so value × from-factor ÷ to-factor gives the answer. Weight values convert through kilograms with the same pattern. Data sizes convert through bytes using the common binary relationship where 1 KB equals 1024 bytes, 1 MB equals 1024 KB, and the scale continues upward.

Temperature needs formulas rather than simple multiplication because Fahrenheit, Celsius and Kelvin have different zero points. The script converts the input temperature to Celsius first, then converts Celsius to the selected output unit. That keeps the logic clear and avoids mixing offset formulas with length or weight factors.

When a local converter is useful

Unit conversion comes up in recipes, shipping, travel, science homework, device storage, product dimensions and international communication. A local converter is quick because there is no account, no server round trip and no external API. It is also predictable: the factors are fixed in the page rather than changing based on a remote service. This site intentionally does not include live currency exchange because currency rates require external data and would violate the privacy-first, fully client-side model.

Rounding and precision

Results are rounded for display with enough digits for everyday work. Very large or very small numbers may use compact browser formatting, and you should apply the precision required by your context. For engineering, medicine, regulated trade or legal reporting, confirm the exact conversion standard and rounding rule. For household measurements, travel estimates and file sizes, the displayed result should be easy to read and sufficiently accurate. Your values never leave the page; the converter simply applies the selected formula in JavaScript and displays the answer immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Which data-size base is used?
Data units use the common binary base of 1 KB = 1024 bytes, 1 MB = 1024 KB and so on.
How are temperatures converted?
Temperature values are converted through Celsius using the standard Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin formulas.
Can I use decimals?
Yes. The value field accepts decimals and negative numbers where the unit category allows them.
Does the converter use external APIs?
No. All conversion factors are built in and run locally. There are no live currency rates or external calls.
