How the final exam score you need is worked out

Most courses calculate the overall grade as a weighted average. Everything you have done so far โ€” homework, quizzes, projects and midterms โ€” counts for one share, and the final exam counts for the rest. If the final is worth w (as a decimal, so 30 % becomes 0.3), your overall grade will be overall = current ร— (1 โˆ’ w) + final ร— w. Solving that equation for the final score gives final = (target โˆ’ current ร— (1 โˆ’ w)) รท w, which is exactly what this calculator shows.

The calculator also shows the two extremes: the grade you would finish with if you scored 100 % on the final and the grade you would keep with a 0. Everything between those two numbers is possible, so they tell you at a glance which targets are realistic. The table below the results repeats the calculation for A, B, C and D on the common 90/80/70/60 scale, marking each one as reachable, not reachable or already secured.

Tips for planning your final

Check your syllabus for the exact weight of the final and whether your current grade in the online grade book already includes every assignment. Missing or ungraded work changes the current grade, and some teachers drop the lowest quiz or replace a midterm with the final score, which changes the formula. If your class is graded in points, convert to percentages first: divide the points you have by the points possible so far, and divide the final's points by the course total to get its weight.

A required score far above your usual exam results is a signal to talk to your teacher about extra credit or to set a more realistic target, while a low required score tells you how much safety margin you have. Use the result to plan your study time across all your exams. The calculator works entirely in your browser โ€” your grades are never uploaded.

How to use

  1. Enter your current gradeType your grade in the class so far, as a percentage, before the final exam.
  2. Set your targetEnter the overall grade you want to finish the course with, for example 90 % for an A.
  3. Add the final's weightType how much the final exam counts toward the overall grade โ€” check your syllabus.
  4. Read the score you needSee the minimum final exam score, the best and worst possible outcome, and a table for A, B, C and D.

Frequently asked questions

How is the required final exam score calculated?
Required = (target โˆ’ current ร— (1 โˆ’ w)) รท w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal. With a current grade of 85 %, a target of 90 % and a final worth 30 %, you need (90 โˆ’ 85 ร— 0.7) รท 0.3 = 101.67 %.
What if the result is over 100 %?
Then the target can't be reached on the final alone. You would need extra credit, a curve or a lower target. The table shows which letter grades are still reachable.
What if the result is 0 or negative?
You have already secured that grade โ€” even a zero on the final keeps you at or above the target, assuming the weights are correct.
My class uses points, not percentages. Does this work?
Convert first: your current grade is points earned รท points possible so far, and the final's weight is final points รท total course points. Then enter the percentages.
Are the letter-grade cut-offs fixed?
The table uses the common US scale of 90/80/70/60. If your school uses different cut-offs, type the exact percentage into the target field.
